2023: HOW MANY VOTES DOES PDP NEED FROM THE S’EAST? — CHIMA CHRISTIAN

The southeast, as a ballot block, has invariably voted only one party in all the presidential elections since 1999.

Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) feels it already has votes of the region in the bag regardless of how it chooses its 2023 presidential and vice-presidential candidates. With this hypothesis, the party feels no need to incentivise the region.

If PDP plays its card well, it will get the kind of voter turnout the southeast registered in 2011 when Goodluck “Ebele Azikiwe” Jonathan first appeared on the ballot as a presidential candidate. If the party deals the southeast with a “bad hand,” the region will respond with voter apathy.

Head or tail, PDP will win the southeast. It is now left for the PDP to decide whether it wants massive turnout, or it wants just 10% of the region to vote.

Well, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) retains the capacity to wow the southeast by picking its presidential candidate from the region. If it does, the speed with which the region will dump the PDP will be more than shocking.

Unfortunately for APC, it does not have the same perceptive value as the PDP, so picking its vice-presidential candidate from the southeast will do next to nothing for them down here. 2023 will be all shades of interesting. We watch.
