The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, has provided insights into why lawmakers unanimously passed the ANSIEC amendment law. He explained that the amendment was essential due to the fact that local government elections haven’t been held in the state for over a decade, making parts of the existing law outdated.

“The State Assembly is constitutionally empowered to make laws for the conduct of local government elections and the administration of councils. We amended the ANSIEC law to align with current realities and ensure the effective functioning of the 21 local government areas in the state,” Udeze said.

He also dismissed rumors of a crisis within the State Assembly, describing them as “unfounded and diversionary.” He emphasized that 26 out of 30 lawmakers supported the amendment based on its merits.

The Speaker praised his colleagues for prioritizing the interests of the people and assured that the Assembly would continue to pass laws that benefit Ndi Anambra. Additionally, Udeze highlighted the independence of the 8th Assembly, stating that it operates without external control.

Udeze expressed confidence in the Assembly’s ability to significantly contribute to the peace and development of Anambra State.
