The administration of Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has officially launched the digitization of students and staff records following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FamilySearch International, a nonprofit organization, on Thursday, 15th May 2025.

The process, which commenced earlier in the week, marks an important milestone in the university’s drive towards the digital transformation promised, as captured in his BLESSeD Vision when he assumed duty as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Primarily, the process will require that all existing paper records, beginning with students’ files from the inception of the university, will be converted into digital formats. The digitized records will not only streamline administrative processes but also help preserve vital documents of genealogical and historical importance for generations to come. It will also make searching and verification of bona fide students and staff seamless.

With the signing of the MOU, FamilySearch International will provide its services at no cost to the university. The Country Manager of the company, Engineer Kelechi Ohabuiro, thanked the University for allowing them to contribute to its growth and development through this process.

The organization is expected to scan and convert an estimated 5 million documents for the period this will last.

Joining the Acting Vice-Chancellor at the signing of the agreement were the University Acting Registrar, Mr Victor Modebelu, the Chief Legal Officer, Professor Nkechi Okpalaobi and Professor Stephen Ufoaroh.
