UEFA: Chelsea’s trip to Lille affected by Abramovich’s UK sanctions

Chelsea can only spend £20,000 on travel for away matches, following the UK government’s sanctions on its owner, Roman Abramovich.

This plunges their Champions League defence into chaos.

The Blues were hit with heavy punishments on Thursday morning after Abramovich was included on a UK Government sanctions list related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

However, Chelsea have been handed a ‘licence’ to operate as a club.

And part of their licence includes a limited budget for fixtures outside Stamford Bridge.

That is going to especially affect European matches as the reigning champions are hamstrung by the tight allowance.

Chelsea beat Lille 2-0 in the first leg of their last-16 showdown in February and visit the French side on Wednesday.
