Reps Urge FG to Investigate Frequent Boat Accidents and Improve Maritime Safety

On December 3, 2024, the House of Representatives called on the Federal Government to investigate the rising number of boat accidents in Nigeria, which have led to significant loss of lives and property. This motion followed the recent Kogi boat disaster that claimed at least 54 lives. The House emphasized the need for improved maritime safety measures, citing factors such as poor boat maintenance, overloading, lack of safety equipment, and inadequate regulation. The House urged relevant agencies, including NIMASA and NIWA, to enforce safety regulations and recommended a thorough investigation into the incidents.
