PETER OBI MARKS 65TH BIRTHDAY WITH SERVICE, DONATES ₦10 MILLION TO RURAL HOSPITAL

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful, Mr. Peter Obi, has marked his 65th birthday with a message of reflection and a renewed commitment to service, urging Nigerians to prioritize improving the lives of others over extravagant celebrations.
In a statement issued on Sunday to commemorate the milestone, Obi described turning 65 as an opportunity for deep reflection on life’s journey and on how the remaining years could be devoted more meaningfully to the service of God and humanity.
According to him, while birthdays in countries with stronger institutions may attract elaborate celebrations, Nigeria’s present realities call for sober reflection and greater commitment to addressing poverty, ill health, unemployment, insecurity, and limited opportunities.
“The greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we are able to touch positively,” Obi stated.
He recalled that throughout his years in business, the corporate sector, and as Governor of Anambra State, he consistently treated public office as an opportunity to improve the lives of others. He said he often encouraged individuals and organizations seeking to honour him to channel resources into projects with enduring public value such as schools, hostels, and educational support programmes.
“The greatest honour anyone can receive is not found in gifts or ceremonies, but in knowing that one’s life has contributed to making another person’s life better,” he added.
Birthday Activities: Mass and Hospital Donation
Obi began the day with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha, expressing gratitude to God for His grace and protection.
He later visited St. Raphael’s Hospital, Umueri in Anambra East LGA, where he donated ₦10 million to support the rural healthcare facility’s efforts to provide quality medical care.
Reflecting on the visit, Obi said interacting with patients reminded him of shared human vulnerability and the need for compassionate leadership.
“Many patients may lack the financial means to pay for their treatment but still deserve dignity, compassion, and access to quality healthcare. True leadership is demonstrated by caring for people, especially those who are unable to repay acts of kindness,” he said.
The former governor concluded by reaffirming that investments in healthcare and education remain the most meaningful contributions to society.
“A hospital preserves life; a school shapes the future. Supporting both sectors is not merely an act of charity but a lasting investment in humanity and in the future of Nigeria,” Obi said.
