Partake In Sporting Activities for talent hunt – Teachers To Pupils

Sports Desk Officer, Onitsha South Local Government Area,under Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Mrs Loveth Anene and the Head Teacher Township Primary School, Fegge, Mrs Esther Onyeonoro have urged school pupils to partake in sporting activities to assist in fishing out talented ones.

The duo while giving the advice believed that destiny differs as some are in education but might end up in one profession or the other, and urged the school head teachers and parents to help their children and wards in out door games for the talent hunt.

They gave the charge at the Onitsha South Council Secretariat, Fegge, during the presentation of the trophies, Medals, and Gold won to the Council Mayor, Hon.Chief Emeka Orji by Township Primary and Christ the King Secondary School, who emerged first and third position at the primary and secondary school levels respectively in the just concluded State Sports Competition held at Awka.

According to Anene who is incharge of the Primary and the Junior Secondary Schools, “Some might end up in the field, like last year, one of my kids was picked for a scholarship for representing Onitsha South LG under sports, so Onitsha South was among those pupils selected in the southeast, their head teachers should be allowing them for this PE activities”.

On their challenges, Anene disclosed that they needed sponsorship especially on finance for hiring coaches, sports equipments like volley ball, javelin, jersey, spark shoes, high jump foam, among others, disclosing that occasionally they go to Chuba Ikpeazu for their training because of those equipments over there that are not removable.

“We have started training again at Godwin Achebe Stadium for the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, federal competition coming up next week but for the state competition, it is an annual event and we have started training also for the 2026 state competition.

“I must commend the Mayor whose fatherly love, prayer and encouragement motivated us to this level, he paid for the bus that took us to Awka for those three days, provided for our feeding and other necessities, he is a father indeed.

“Also I thank our Governor, Prof.Charles Soludo for this year sporting completion because previously we have been going to this competition, like last year, our children came back with medals without any envelop, appreciation, or encouragement but this time, the governor really tried. With this motivation from our Mayor and that of the governor, these children will be motivated,” she stated.

Mrs Onyeonoro also urged pupils to take every aspect of whatever they are taught in the school serious, pointing out that “If you don’t make it in teaching and learning as regards reading and writing, you may make it in some other fields like sports. It may be your profession for life,” she disclosed.

Contributing, the Post Primary Secondary Schools Commission, PPSSC, Onitsha South Sports Officer, Mrs Nwachukwu Ginika, from Metu Memorial Secondary School corraborated the views of Anene that they have started another training against next year’s competition.

However, She disclosed that the training would first start from the community levels, pointing out that this community level is for those living in the villages and then to local governments which is where all the LGs would join, and then to zonal and to state, that comprises all the 21 LGs.

She also appreciated the Mayor for his contribution and effort which encouraged them so much and stated that it is one of the reasons they decided to come and see him, to thank him and appreciate him.

Nwachukwu also thanked Governor Charles Soludo for the School Sporting completion initiative which she said was a very good initiative, adding that through that, they can be able to get children from the grassroot with talents, thereby catching them as young talents and training them hard as they grow.

In her motherly care, one of the Township Primary School Executives, Lady Theresa Ezeahulukwe Ojiugo, (Mother general) while expressing her joy over the 1st position of the school in the state, stated that she came with them to thank the Mayor for his contributions, and prayed for God’s blessings on his endeavours.
