ANAMBRA: OBIANO INAUGURATES DISABILITY RIGHTS COMMISSION

The Governor of Anambra state Governor Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano has inaugurated the State Disability Rights Commission which was established by the law and passed in 2018.
The inauguration which took place at the EXCO chambers Government House Awka is to be chaired by Barr. Chuka Ezewuzie.
Obiano charged members of the Disability Rights Commission to see that policies and programmes that will ensure the protection of the rights of persons living with disabilities in Anambra state are guaranteed.

The members of the commission include:
- Barr. Chukwuka B. Ezewuzie ESQ-Chairman
- Barr. Chinenye Okeke – Secretary (Deputy Director representing Ministry of Justice).
- Comr. Ugochukwu Ernest C. Okeke – JONAPWD State Chairman (Representing the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities Anambra State Chapter).
- Mrs Obianyo Anthonia – Director Rehab ( Representing Ministry of Women and Children Affairs).
- Miss Victoria Okonkwo – Unit Head Ministry of Basic Education ( Representing Ministry of Education).
- Mr Tony Oli – Representing Anambra State Sports Commission.
- Bishop Moses Ezedebego – Representing Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
- Dr Lady Pat Okeke -( The wife of Chief Godwin Okeke GUO Motors representing Private Sector).
- Mrs Eucharia Anekwe – Director Gender Perspective and Social Development Centre ( Representing Civil Society Organisation focusing on Disability Issues).
- Mr Williams Ndidika Umeh – Retired Director of Education and Former Head of Department ( HOD) Education and Social Development Local Government Service Commission.
However, the functions of the Commission include:
Issuance of directives and guidelines on all manner of disabilities, preventive or curative exercise.

Implementing government policies in the law in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), issuance of guidelines for education, social development and welfare of persons living with disabilities; And other functions stipulated in section 12 (a-u) of Anambra state disability Right law 2018, amongst other functions.
” By the power bestored on me as the governor of Anambra state you are Herby inaugurated.
In his reaction, Barr, Ezewuzie said that ” Your excellency, Chief Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano (Ogugua NDI plus) this shows the level of your commitment, we will ever move forward. What the Governor has done was a consolidation of his 8 years of achievements for the disability Community.
He has been doing this before he came into power, coming to politics is an opportunity to do what he has been doing.

You said before you live in the office people will be coming to Anambra to see how to take care of the people with disability and it’s happening.
You have done more than what you promised.
The establishment of Persons with Disabilities is a way to guarantee what you have done will continue

Ezequiel, who also reminded the Governor of the killing of Mr Mmaduabuchi Nnofu, a visually impaired and Coordinator of Joint National Association of Persons with Disability (JONAPWD) in Aguata, that the inauguration of the Commission came at the right time, to protect the members of the Community.
The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, stated that ‘ the journey of the Obiano led administration with Disability Community stretches back to the first exco in 2014 “
That over 400 persons living with disability have been employed, and also with 3 permanent secretaries from the community by Gov. Willie Obiano and wife.
A presentation of compiled, Anambra state Disability Rights Law, Federal Acts which Anambra was the first, United Nations Right of Disability and a minute silence was observed for Mr Mmaduabuchi Nnofu, a visually impaired and Coordinator of Joint National Association of Person who was murdered in Aguata.
