The Nigerian Navy Ship, Lugard, has identified a breach of safety protocols as the primary cause of the recent boat tragedy in Kogi State that resulted in multiple fatalities. Commodore Tamuno Senibo, Commander of NNS Lugard Lokoja, revealed this information during a free medical outreach in Kungbani, located in the Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State. He explained, “Overloading is a significant issue on our waterways. Boats designed to carry 15 passengers often accommodate as many as 50, and unfortunately, many of these passengers are without life jackets, which are critical for safety.” Senibo emphasized that the failure to follow proper safety guidelines led to the boat disaster in Kogi that claimed several lives. He called on relevant authorities to enforce regulations requiring life jackets and other safety equipment for waterway travelers. “We’re not just offering advice. The Nigerian Navy Ship is leading the way in ensuring the use of safety jackets and other necessary measures on our waterways. With the support of all stakeholders, I am hopeful that we can raise awareness about the importance of safety protocols,” he added. During the medical outreach, Commodore Senibo noted that it was part of the Navy’s non-kinetic approach to ensuring security in Kogi State. He said, “We believe winning the hearts of the people is essential for security. It’s not just about using force; gaining the support of the community is key to achieving our goals.” While not calling it a corporate social responsibility, Senibo emphasized the Navy’s desire to contribute to the community’s well-being. “We want to show ourselves not only as officers but also as partners in the progress and safety of our environment.” He further explained that the Chief of Naval Staff had directed a strategic initiative for medical outreach, following similar efforts such as educational outreach and other community support initiatives. Senibo concluded by reaffirming that NNS Lugard would continue to collaborate with other security agencies to maintain peace and security in Kogi State.
