The Minister of State for Works, Mohammed Bello Goronyo, has issued a strong warning to contractors working on projects for the Federal Emergency and Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), stressing the importance of fulfilling their obligations or facing penalties. During a familiarization tour of FERMA’s South West section, Goronyo declared that the days of abandoning projects are over, reminding contractors that taxpayer funds are being used, and the public deserves full value for their money. The Minister directed FERMA to submit a detailed list of non-compliant contractors within a week for further action. He also called for the establishment of a dedicated Technical Committee to monitor projects across the country to ensure they are completed on time and meet quality standards. “We must confront the challenges we face directly,” said Goronyo, adding that the country has relied on insufficient resources for too long but now has a President willing to address these issues head-on. Goronyo also pledged to make surprise visits to project sites to assess contractor performance firsthand and assured FERMA staff that their welfare would remain a top priority. While acknowledging the challenges FERMA faces, he expressed confidence that they are surmountable. He emphasized the need for collective support to help President Bola Ahmed Tinubu achieve his goals, underscoring that doing things differently is essential to overcoming current obstacles. Goronyo praised the dedication of Federal Road Management Engineers (FRME) in the South West and encouraged collaborative efforts to ensure FERMA’s success.
