Law Maker Visits Scene Of Gas Explosion, Describes It As Devastating

The member representing Onitsha South 1 Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Fred Ezenwa has visited the scene of the welding gas cylinder explosion.

Sympathizing with the affected families, the Lawmaker described the incident as very devastating, assuring them that he would pass the information to the State Government and would continue to monitor about the progress of those in the hospital.

In an interview with Journalists Hon.Ezenwa said, “I visited the scene this Saturday morning .I was told that both the plumbing market chairman and the line chairman have not come to the market” stated that the people he met at the spot said that the deceased died during the construction of street light poles and water tank stand.

The deceased was said to have been operating the gas cylinder elsewhere and brought the products to the shop for sell but he recently transfered the gas cylinder from the place it used to be to his shop.

He warned that keeping the gas cylinder at the shop was very dangerous, saying that chairman of plumbing market and chairman of the Line were said to have repeatedly warned them to relocate the cylinder from the place but the warnings fell on deaf ears.

“I was told also that the deceased apprentice whom the explosion cut one of the legs later died. I commiserated with them”,Ezenwa said

Superintendent of Police (SP) Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command had said that the gas cylinder exploded as the welder was working on a metal due to exposure to excess heat, stressing that Police rescued about six victims.

“The six rescued victims are currently receiving treatment in the hospital, while the two deceased has been deposited in a morgue.

“The Police operatives have taken steps to secure the area and prevent criminal-minded persons from taking advantage of the situation to commit crimes.
