IPCR Celebrates Milestone in Gender Inclusion as Amina Zemo Becomes ASURI Chair

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has lauded the election of Barrister Amina Zemo as Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutes (ASURI), describing her emergence as a landmark achievement for gender equity and inclusive leadership.
In a congratulatory statement issued by the Head of IPCR’s Gender, Peace, and Security Unit, Ms. Grace Awodu, the institute described Zemo’s election as a “powerful endorsement of inclusion, competence, and merit.” “This milestone is more than a win for gender it sends a clear message that leadership belongs to those who are capable, regardless of gender,” the statement read.
Zemo’s emergence marks a significant chapter in IPCR’s history, as both of its staff unions are now led by women. Comrade Caroline Dakut currently heads the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), reinforcing the institute’s steady march toward gender-balanced leadership. “This is a proud moment for IPCR. It reflects our commitment to not just advocating for gender equity, but embodying it in our structures and leadership,” Awodu noted.
The statement also praised the broader acceptance of female leadership within the research and academic community, adding that “when women lead, excellence follows.” Reinforcing this sentiment with a cultural touch, the institute cited an Igbo proverb: “Nwa Nwanyi Bu Ihe Ukwu” translated as “The girl child is a great thing.”
IPCR called for sustained investment in the training, support, and empowerment of girls and women, stressing that inclusive leadership is key to national development and institutional transformation.
