INEC Proposes Use of Computer-Generated Voting Slips, Says PVCs Shouldn’t Be Sole Voting Requirement

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recommended that computer-generated voting slips be introduced as an alternative for voters without Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), especially with the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this announcement during a consultative meeting with Residents Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Thursday. He emphasized that PVCs should no longer be the only means of voter accreditation, as the new system would reduce costs, prevent PVC-related fraud, and address the challenge of PVC collection. Yakubu also shared key findings from the Commission’s review of the 2023 general elections, detailing 142 recommendations for improvements in various areas, including voter management, election technology, and the legal framework. The Commission is set to present some of these recommendations to the National Assembly for legislative action.
