FCT Health Insurance Scheme Exceeds 2024 Enrolment Targets– Official

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS) has surpassed its 2024 enrolment goals, according to Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat. Dr. Fasawe made the announcement following a road walk organized by the FHIS to mark Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) Day 2024 in Abuja. The UHC initiative aims to ensure that no one, particularly the vulnerable and disadvantaged, is excluded from healthcare services. Dr. Fasawe, represented by Dr. Baba-Gana Adam, the Permanent Secretary of HSES, explained that the FHIS had a goal of enrolling 100,000 individuals over four years, with an annual target of 25,000 enrollees. However, the scheme exceeded this target, enrolling 36,000 people between January and November 2024, surpassing the goal by 11,000. The enrolment is still ongoing, with additional registrations expected before the end of the year. She further emphasized that with a solid legal framework now in place, the FHIS is on track to meet its goals for enrolling individuals in the informal sector. Additionally, she highlighted that all outstanding payments to Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) have been cleared, and payments for the first quarter of 2025 have already been approved. Dr. Salamatu Belgore, Acting Director of FHIS, also presented a UHC Day call to action letter to Dr. Fasawe, stressing that healthcare is a fundamental human right. The letter outlines proposals for further strengthening the legal framework, investing in public health infrastructure, and ensuring equitable funding to enroll the poor and vulnerable. Belgore also pointed out that globally, financial protection in healthcare has worsened, with millions of people being pushed into poverty due to health expenses. She urged the need for continued investment in Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly in primary health care and digital innovations, to address these challenges.
