Children’s Day: Onitsha South Mayor Calls For Drastic Measures On Child Trafficking, Child Labour, Others

The Mayor of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon Chief Emeka Orji has called on parents to take drastic measures to address problems such as child trafficking, child labour, rape, early marriage bethrodal with its consequences.
The Mayor who made the call in his welcome address at the Council Secretariat during the children’s day celebration stated that our children deserve good education and positive social orientation, he also pointed out that it is a well known fact that untrained and uneducated child is a menace to the society.
He said that”Our nation is presently characterized by such vices as poverty, insecurity of lives and properties, moral degeneration, armed robbery, kidnapping and all forms of corruption
“The federal government in collaboration with the states and all the local government in Nigeria are making frantic effort to change the value system of the country and inculcate into the Nigerian child a culture of patriotism and loyalty to the nation.
“The government of Anambra State under His Excellency, Prof Charles Soludo is not relenting in his holistic efforts to see that children are given the best treatment and care which they truly deserve.
“In education, policies and programs have been implemented for the improvement and provision of quality education in our schools, the impact of these well thought out programme are seen in the number of educational facilities provided, prompt payment of teachers salaries and conducive learning learning materials/environment.
He also urged the youths, students and pupils to desist from all kinds of negative vices such as cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, prostitution,drug abuse, thurgery among other vices
In her words, Mrs Ugochukwu Anyansi from Local Government Education Authority, Fegge, LGEA, who represented the Officer In Charge, LGEA in an interview charged children to always pay attention in their studies, be useful to themselves and know what they want in life.
She also appealed to the Mayor for his support whenever they would call upon him. She also called his attention to Nweje Primary School which the Mayor immediately responded by sending someone to go and get the photograph of the school for immediate attention.
Contributing, the Supervisory Councillor, Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Echezona Dunu thanked God for the conducive atmosphere which made today’s children’s day a success, he also equally commended thanked the Mayor for hosting this year’s children’s day.
Commending all the children in the area, Hon.Dunu quoted psalm 127 vs 1 and said “Children are the heritage from the Lord and the fruit of the womb is it’s reward, believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way, show them the beauty they possess inside, give them a sense of pride and to make it easier, let the children’s laughter reminds us how we used to be”
“With these song, I celebrate all the children in Onitsha South LG. He also thanked Urban Girls Secondary School who represented Onitsha South LG in Awka for the 2nd position among the secondary schools in Anambra State and their first position in this year’s children’s day in Onitsha South LG.
The result of the Childrens Day in Onitsha South LG(Secondary School category) has it that Urban Girls Secondary School has the first position, Infant Jesus Secondary School, 2nd position while the 3rd position was Promise International School Fegge.
Ziks Avenue Primary School Fegge and Infant Jesus Primary have the first and 2nd positions respectively
