The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, says the soon-to-be-completed bus terminals under construction across the capital will significantly transform Abuja’s transportation system and enhance security.

Speaking to journalists during an inspection tour of critical infrastructure projects on Monday, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at the Mabushi and Kugbo bus terminals. He also assessed ongoing works at the Court of Appeal access road in Dakibiyu, Jabi District, and Kez Udezue Street off Banex-Kado Road in Mabushi.

“Bus terminals are key to overhauling our transport system,” Wike said. “I’m impressed with what we’ve seen so far. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, we’re committed to delivering world-class infrastructure for Abuja residents. We’re doing everything possible to meet the agreed timelines.”

The Minister emphasized the broader impact of the terminals, particularly in reducing criminal activity and restoring order to the city’s transit landscape. “With properly managed bus terminals, people won’t need to loiter on the streets waiting for random vehicles. This structure allows us to identify both the drivers and vehicles in operation, which helps curb incidents like the notorious ‘one chance’ robberies. It’s part of our effort to sanitize the city and eliminate makeshift motor parks springing up everywhere.”

Wike also acknowledged improvements made at the Mabushi terminal following earlier concerns he raised about substandard finishes. “There’s been a marked improvement,” he noted. “I had to express my dissatisfaction during a previous visit, but the contractor has really stepped up since then.”

On the anticipated commissioning of the projects, the Minister explained that the timing would align with President Tinubu’s schedule as part of events marking his administration’s second year in office. “The President will decide the commissioning dates. Not everything has to happen on May 29. We anticipate a phased commissioning process over two weeks, subject to Mr. President’s approval,” Wike clarified.

He attributed the progress in project execution to responsible financial planning and presidential backing, assuring that the FCT Administration remains focused on delivering value within available resources. “We don’t award contracts arbitrarily. Everything is based on the funds we have. With the support of the President and the prudent use of internally generated revenue, we’ve been able to prioritize our spending effectively,” he said.
