Community leader, Chief Chuks Augustine Mgbemena, was among three distinguished personalities honoured with prestigious traditional chieftaincy titles by the traditional ruler of Obosi, Igwe Chidubem Iweka (Eze Iweka III), during the celebration of the 15th Obiora/Iwaji Obosi Festival, held at the Obosi Township Stadium on October 24.
The titles conferred by Igwe Iweka, which rank immediately below those held by members of the traditional ruler’s cabinet, recognised the contributions of the recipients to the development of the community. Chief Mgbemena received the title, Ikukuoma Obosi, in recognition of his humanitarian and philanthropic contributions to the town and its people.
While conferring the title, Igwe Iweka urged Chief Mgbemena not to relent in his humanitarian activities, noting that his contributions had positively impacted Obosi and its residents.
In his response, Chief Mgbemena expressed his passion for the development of Obosi, stressing that human capital development remained fundamental to achieving meaningful progress in any community. He explained that people were the most important resource in development because they possessed the capacity to harness material and financial resources for transformative initiatives.
”I am a philanthropist who is passionate about the development of Obosi, although I don’t engage in self-praise about it. I sincerely believe in human development, which includes giving scholarships to young people from poor homes and making financial donations to the Obosi Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Organisation,” Mgbemena said.
The traditional title, Ikukuoma Obosi, translates to “the good wind” in English. The name aptly reflects his contributions to the community, including financial support towards addressing ecological challenges in Obosi, assistance to underprivileged residents and scholarships for young people pursuing tertiary education.
Beyond his philanthropic activities, Chief Mgbemena is an accomplished maritime professional who has risen through the ranks to become a Deputy Director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). His career progression reflects his dedication, professional competence, hard work and commitment to duty.
His academic background, professional training and participation in specialised courses within and outside Nigeria have further equipped him with the knowledge and expertise required in the maritime industry. He also shares his wealth of experience with younger colleagues through mentorship, helping to develop the next generation of maritime professionals.
Chief Mgbemena’s professional accomplishments, philanthropic contributions, community leadership and personal qualities have made him a source of inspiration to many young people in Obosi. His commitment to mentorship and community development has earned him admiration among the youth.
Indeed, the traditional title, Ikukuoma Obosi, represents a fitting recognition of his contributions. Like a beneficial wind, his philanthropy, exemplary leadership, mentorship and commitment to humanity continue to make positive impacts across Obosi.
