Daniele Pieroni, a writer suffering from Parkinson’s disease, has become the first person to die via assisted suicide under Tuscany’s new fast-track law.

He passed away at home on May 17 after self-administering a lethal drug, following approval under regional rules introduced in February. National legislation remains stalled, while Italy’s Constitutional Court allows assisted suicide only in specific cases.
