Governor Soludo Flags Off Desilting Of Drainages In Onitsha South Local Government ….. As Mayor Orji Warns Against Indiscriminate Dumping Of Refuse

To ensure free flow of rain waters this raining season and in response to recent flooding incidents in and around Iweka road, Ziks Avenue and others, the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo who was ably represented by his Deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim on 6th June flagged off desilting of drainages at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Onitsha South Local Government Area.

Gov.Soludo while inspecting the work after the flag off suggested on ways and directives to rechannel some spots which might be the cause of flooding so that flood would move easily without any hitch.

He after sighting the machineries and manpower on ground for the work, commended the Onitsha South Local Government Mayor, Hon Chief Emeka Orji for his dedication to duty, stated that he(Mayor) was fully prepared for the work.

The Mayor in his response thanked Mr Governor for his visit despite his tight schedule, disclosed that Desilting of drainages is an annual event in preparation for the rainy season, stated “We flagged off with excavator, tools and tippers and I thank God it was very successful and it is ongoing.

“We would do it to the next one, two weeks to months because the sakamori and drainages in Onitsha South is quite huge, it is not something to be done under one or two days.

Orji urged residence, business owners and passersby to stop indiscriminate disposal and flight tipping of waste along water/drainage channels across Onitsha South Local Government, maintained that defaulters if caught would never go unpunished or fined.

Places to desilt, the meters and in one categorization are Premier bypass 900m, Premier bypass down 2500m, Church Street 900m, Church Street by Port Harcourt Road 20m, Sakamori phase 1 700m, Long Sakamori to Nwangene 910m, Sakamori phase 2 710m, Nwangene River Niger.

Others are Ziks Avenue 2700m, Sakamori by Housing Estate 750m, Sakamori by Ochanja 30m, Creek Road 2500m, Iweka Road 2500m.

Places in cat 2 are Mbonu Ojike 500m, Head bridge by Ogbo Osisi 740m, Expressway by Housing Estate 670m, Housing Estate 700m, Port Harcourt Road by FB 40m, Expressway by Lake Petroleum-Agofure Park 40m, Niger Street 100m.

Others are Bida 2900m, Modebe Avenue 2400m, Mbanefo Street 500m, Upper Iweka by Flyover area both sides 800m, Port Harcourt Road 3200m.

Others in Cat 3 are Mbonu Ojike by Port Harcourt Road 15m, Uga Street 600m, Ozomagala 1300m, Menax 700m and Akunnia 700m.
