Nigeria’s CNG Conversion Capacity Surges by 2,500%

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reported a 2,500% increase in the nation’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion capacity in 2024. The milestone, driven by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), includes 186 new conversion centers and over $400 million in investments for new refueling stations. NMDPRA aims to expand CNG infrastructure in key cities and boost the gas vehicle population, currently at 30,000–50,000. Challenges such as unlicensed facilities and regulatory noncompliance persist, but the agency is committed to strengthening oversight and ensuring sustainable growth in 2025.
