UNIZIK Lecturer Killed by Suspected Car Thieves in Awka

Dr. Osita Chinedu, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), was shot and killed on Monday evening in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, by individuals suspected to be part of a car-snatching gang. According to sources near the High-Tension area in Aroma, where the incident occurred, the assailants confronted Dr. Chinedu, demanding his car keys before fatally shooting him. It remains unclear whether the attackers succeeded in stealing his car, but reports indicate that he died at the scene around 7 p.m. A UNIZIK staff member who informed colleagues about the incident said, “Yes, someone was shot dead near High Tension this evening. They say he was a lecturer from UNIZIK, from Nteje.” The staff member urged caution, especially during the festive season, adding, “If they come for your car, just hand it over; our lives are more important.” Another colleague, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed shock and frustration: “A fellow lecturer and sports enthusiast was shot dead last night. This is no longer a joke. We, along with our children, are no longer safe in this state, in the capital city,” the outraged lecturer said. As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Police Command, led by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, had not yet issued a statement on the incident.
