President Bola Tinubu and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier are currently engaged in a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Steinmeier, who arrived in Abuja on Tuesday evening for a state visit, is marking a significant milestone in the 60-year diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Germany. He was officially welcomed by President Tinubu at the Villa’s Forecourt at around 11:06 am. Following the reception, a brief ceremony took place, including the national anthems of both countries, an inspection of the Guard of Honour by the Presidential Brigade of Guards, and a 21-gun salute. The leaders then proceeded to the President’s office for their private discussions. Accompanying Steinmeier is a delegation of CEOs and senior executives from leading German companies in the IT and energy sectors. During his visit, he is set to meet with business leaders, visit a start-up hub, and engage with cultural icons like Dr. Nike Okundaye and Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka. Steinmeier is also scheduled to visit Lagos, where he will explore the city’s urban development and learn about the environmental and social challenges of one of Africa’s largest megacities. This visit continues Germany’s tradition of diplomatic engagement with Nigeria. Steinmeier is the second German leader to visit Nigeria in the past 14 months, following Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit in October 2023. Tinubu had also participated in the G20 Compact with Africa Economic Conference in November 2023 at Scholz’s invitation. The two leaders are expected to address the press after their private talks, with a focus on enhancing economic cooperation and sustainable development.
