Public Schools in Aba shut down over unpaid salaries

www.odogwublog.com reports that in a bid to express their heart displeasure over five months unpaid salary arrears, public Primary and Secondary school teachers in the commercial nerve centre of Aba, Abia State have embarked on an indefinite strike.

Rising from its meeting held yesterday, separately at Abayi Primary School and Boys Technical College, BTC, all in the commercial city, the National Union Of Teachers, NUT, Abia State chapter insisted on embarking on an indefinite strike following the inability of the Governor Okezie Ikpeazu led administration to pay the teachers.

Speaking in Aba one of the affected teachers who do not want her name in print told our Correspondent that the inability of the state government to clear the salary backlog owed teachers is really affecting the education system in the State.

According to her the government is owing primary school teachers (January to April, 2018), while the secondary school teachers are being owed five months ( Dec 2017 to April 2018).

She had therefore called on the state government to do the needful by clearing the remaining salary backlogs to enable the teachers, students and pupils return to their various schools across the state.

When www.odogwublog.com in Aba visited some schools in the city all the government owned primary and secondary schools were under lock and keys while efforts made to reach the state chairman of the NUT could not yield any results.

However, contacted the state Commissioner for Information John Okiyi Kalu said in Aba that the state government will be meeting with the NUT yesterday (Wednesday) and will get back to us after the meeting.
