NDLEA Anambra arraigns 10 Suspects in Awka , convicts 22



www.odogwublog.com reports that Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arraigned ten (10) male persons before Justice Ibrahim Gafai of the Federal High Court, Awka , for unlawful possession of illicit drugs.
The suspects included, Echezona Anazodo, aged thirty-seven, arrested with three hundred grams of Cannabis Sativa, Chigozie Okeke, aged twenty one, arrested at Onitsha Motor Park with three hundred grams of Cannabis sativa, Ngozi Dike, aged thirty who hails from Imo State, and was arrested at Onitsha Motor Park with one point nine grams of cocaine.
Others were Owen Bosah, age fifty five, arrested with zero point six grams of heroin, Nnamdi Nwafor, aged thirty six, who was arrested at Aba Motor Park, Onitsha with eight point four grams of cocaine and two point two grams of heroin, thirty year old Udekwe Onuorah from Nando, who was allegedly arrested with two grams of cocaine, and Umeh Arinze, aged thirty seven, arrested with four point one grams of heroin.
All defendants pleaded not guilty, while Paul Odo, arrested with three hundred and twenty grams of Cannabis sativa, Okwudili Chukwudim, arrested at Ihiala Motor Park with three hundred grams of Cannabis sativa, pleaded guilty with reasons.
Appearance was also made for Arinze Nwabueze, who was granted bail but did not appear in court.
According to the State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr Sule Momodu who waws represented by  Head of the Legal Department of the NDLEA, Anambra State Command, Barrister Patrick Echuwa, within the first quarter alone, about thirty five arrests have been made, with about fourteen convictions, stressing that from the records, cases of illicit drug business is on the rise, despite several prosecutions by the command, calling for more support by stakeholders to reverse the situation.
He expressed optimism that convictions will be made by the court to serve as a deterrent.
Various dates of hearing were given by Justice Ibrahim Gafai including tenth of May, twenty second, twenty fourth, as well as sixth and seventh June two thousand and eighteen. for hearing of the cases.
Meanwhile, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Anambra state command says it has convicted twenty- two (22) persons within the past eight (8) months.
State Commander of the state NDLEA, Mr Sule Momode said the command, at present, has about one hundred and sixty (160) cases in the Federal High Court against drug offenders.

Speaking on behalf of the Commander, in an ABS live audience participatory programme, “NDLEA and You”,  the Assistant Commander, operations and Intelligence, Mr. Inalegwu Ameh,
The Assistant Commander disclosed that over the past five years, NDLEA has discovered ten (10) clandestine laboratories, out of which, six (6) where located in Anambra. He said further that for the war against illicit drug to have the desired impact, communities must get involved.
Mr. Ameh,who said there must be unity of purpose amongst community members, called for communal laws against illicit drug.
He commended the Willie Obiano-led administration for its doggedness in the fight against drug abuse.
Meanwhile , the NDLEA Anambra state Boss informed that the state command has commenced raiding in rural communities where trafficking and use of dangerous drugs are on the rise presently.
The command raided Umunnachi, a community in Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state, where an alleged notorious drug dealer is arrested while the major dealer escaped upon the invasion of the men of the NDLEA in his house.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Charles Odigie, revealed that two big bags and 18 packs of the substance suspected to be cannabis have been recovered in the raid.
He appealed to members of the various communities in the state to support the agency by providing useful information on drug peddlers which will aid their arrest and reduce the society of crime and criminality.
Odigie hinted that the command will carry on more sensitization on the effects of drug trafficking and its intake.
