Anambra Varsity students protest Vice Chancellor’s removal , writes Obiano

www.odogwublog.com reports that protests by Students Union Government of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra state for the removal of the Vice Chancellor , Prof (Sir) Fidelis Uzochukwu Okafor were yesterday aborted even as they appealed in an open letter to Governor Willie Obiano to intervene and restore Prof Okafor as the VC.
The students raised an alarm that the Vice-Chancellor was issued with a letter informing him that his tenure elapses on 10th September, 2018, instead of 2019 as provided by the University Law signed by His Excellency Governor Willie Obiano himself.
They said the letter has brought  so much confusion in the Institution, affecting the stability of the University Academic Calendar as the already scheduled convocation has been postponed indefinitely.

The open letter was signed by Comrades Benneth Udochukwu President ; Olisa Chinecherem SUG Secretary General ; Obiakor Nelson , Deputy Speaker;  Eze Wisdom , Member House of Assembly;  Iloakasia Ogechukwu, Financial Secretary ; Ifeanachor Kingsley, DOS;  Onwuasoanya Chisimdi ,Member House of Representatives.
Others were  Anthony Precious , Sergeant at Arms; Obidika Chidera , Member House of Representatives; Nwofor Tony Chisom , House of Representatives; Mark David Onyekachi, former SUG PRO; Obi Keto SUG DOT, Okemmadu Kizito, SUG PRO; and Hon Justice Uchenna Chinedu , SUG Chief Judge .

The Open letter read: ‘’….recall that some concerned students nearly took to streets on Friday, March 02, 2018, as a result of the ongoingcrisis in the University. The students were however, calmed down by the Students Union Government, and promised that the issue would be resolved.
They prayed Obiano to reinstate the Vice-Chancellor- Prof. Fidelis Okafor in the interest of the students and allow him stay till the end of his tenure in 2019, or at least allow him complete 2017/2018 academic session without going on any leave.
The Students Union (SUG) further appealed to the Student-loving Governor of Anambra State to ensure the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor ends in September, 2019.
‘’If the law of the University has been sidelined, and a four year (4-year) term adopted, that the students be enlightened more.
‘’ If so as stated in 2aabove, and that the Vice-Chancellor accepts to handover in September, 2018, and is entitled to 6 months leave, he has the option of consenting to proceed for the leave if he so wishes; it is only an entitlement and not mandatory.
‘’ If the Vice-Chancellor accepts to proceed on the mandatory leave which however, has a punitive connotation, has the right to appoint someone to oversee the affairs of the University during his leave.
‘’If the Vice-Chancellor- Prof. F. U. Okafor has indeed appointed someone to act for him during the leave, could the appointment be allowed to stand until a proper handover is made to whomever the State Government so wishes.
The students congratulates the Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief (Dr) Willie Obiano for winning 21/21 in the just concluded November 18th gubernatorial election; the first in history.
The SUG observed that the University has gained so much from Obiano’s administration starting from the increment in the subvention of the University, as well as the construction of the Engineering Complex at Uli Campus and the Giant Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Building at Igbariam Campus.
The statement added that: ‘’ Our Vice-Chancellor, Prof (Sir) Fidelis Uzochukwu Okafor is a peaceful man who loves humanity and cares selflessly for humanity in all ramifications. He has transformed ChukwuemekaOdumegwuOjukwu University from worst to best through the intervention of the State Government led by His Excellency. He initiated the annual convocation system in the University, introduced new Departments and Faculties; giving more opportunity to youth of being fixed into COOU. This is evident at the just concluded Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) application which attracted over 30,000 applicants in COOU.
It concluded: ‘’Prof Okafor also has bettered the Institution’s academic calendar in such a way that students graduate and proceed to NYSC immediately after their graduation (this only happens in COOU)’’.
