Nigerian Legion Anambra state appeals to Obiano to release its 2017 Budget ----set to empower 200 widows of fallen heroes
www.odogwublog.com reports that Anambra
State chapter of the Nigerian Legion has appealed to Governor Willie
Obiano to intervene for the immediate release of the 2017 Budget of the
organization to enable them start resolving so many of their challenges.
Speaking
with a select newsmen on the side-line after the Wreath Laying and
Parade to mark the 2018 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day at Dr Alex
Ekwueme Square, Awka, the state Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Anambra
state chapter, Elder Major Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Nwankwo, CNC said they
are hopeful for the budget’s approval.
He said
the budget was approved by the Governor and passed by the state House of
Assembly last year but the Legion has not gotten any kobo yet.
He
said: “It will us interest you to know that the 2017 budget approved
the governor and the state Assembly for the legion has not been released
till date and we passionately appeal to the Governor to kindly ensure
that the money is released to enable the legion cope with other
challenges and solve other problems’’.
Major
Elder Nwankwo, flanked by his vice, Major Christopher O Nwakanmuo, CNC
and treasurer, Major Godwin Malife (CNC), said about Two Hundred (200)
widows of their fallen heroes from Anambra state will be empowered by
the state chapter of the Nigerian legion to ameliorate their problems
and take care of their immediate families.
The
widows, he revealed will be empowered with grinding and sewing machines,
farming inputs/implements, consumables and financial empowerment among
other items during this year’s Nigerian Legion Day on a date yet to be
announced.
He requested widows of retired fallen
heroes in the state to come and register with them so that they can be
included in the forthcoming Fallen Heroes widows empowerment by the
state Legion.
The
Anambra state Chairman of the Nigerian Legion however solicited for
concerted effort and financial assistant from both the government and
public spirited individuals to carry out the lofty project, which, he
said, will be an annual ritual in the state.
Nwankwo,
literally wept over lack of an administrative office in the state
lamenting that only Anambra state Legion has no Secretariat in the
country.
While decrying lack of secretariat in
the state for the legionnaires, Nwankwo called on Governor Willie Obiano
to come to their rescue by providing a land where the state secretariat
would be erected.
Elder Nwankwo regretted that
non utilization of the previous parcel of land allocated to the legion
opposite the government house by Group Captain Garba Rufai (Rtd) by the
previous administrations of the legion made the state, the only state
in the south east that exists without a secretariat.
“We
need financial support from both the government and public spirited
individuals. Anambra state is the only state in the whole country that
has no secretariat and Anambra is also the only state that N1 million is
the standard amount been given to the Legionnaires annually. It is now a
ritual but we want the government to improve on their welfare package
for us.
“ I am aware that Rivers state governor,
Nyeson Wike, graciously gave the sum of N100 million to the state
legion and Gov. Ambode of Lagos state gives N25 million, including other
packages. We are not comparing our governor with them because we know
that he is really working but we need improvement. We are really, in
dare need of public assistance” he appealed.
“We
will also want the governor to provide an SUV car for the chairman or
replace the Legion’s bus that is now in bad shape and as well, enlist us
as one of the beneficiaries of the community project initiatives
organised by his administration. We have given much to the world and
nothing should be looked on as too big to be given back to us in return”
he appealed.
