www.odogwublog.com reports that Business activities were temporarily haunted when two banks
and about ten (10) shopping plazas, as well as other ancillary
business outfits at the Onitsha market, Anambra State were saved by
traders and youths from been razed down.
The fire said to have started at about 11am had spread and
destroyed property worth millions of naira before the arrival of men of
the Fire service.
This provoked the traders and others who had combated the fire for over two hours before the arrival of the firemen.

A witness told our correspondent that," Men of the Fire
service who arrived later when the fire had been put off were attacked
as the angry mob who waited for their arrival but were disappointed
when they were not forth coming, started throwing sachets of pure water
and stone at them.
"The firefighters were ordered by the mob to go back to where they came from; that their job had been done, threatening to burn their vehicle if they would not leave.

"Over ten shopping Plazas and two banks located near the
market would have been engulfed by the fire outbreak that started on
the New Market Road very close to the market.
The fire allegedly started at about 11am from the plant house of a bank , when one a wire sparked and ignited fire.
The power house, containing two Lister generators was razed down.
"The traders who were already at their shops when the fire
incident started rushed to the scene to help stop the fire from
spreading, which would have been disastrous for all the markets located
in the area," a witness stated.
Effort to speak with officials of the banks did not yield any result as security men did not allow entrance into the bank.
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Central Police
Station Onitsha, Mr. Ikechukwu Egbochukwu, and other security agents
were seen at the scene, assisting in crowd control.
The DPO declined comments on the development, quipping, "
We are still investigating; we are here to ensure there is no breakdown
of law and order".
