Anambra community laments police night invasion
www.odogwublog.com reports that the people of Uruagu-Nnewi, Anambra state have expressed their displeasure over police midnight invasion of their community.
The
President General of the community, Hon Charles Nwonye said that the community is not opposed to any of the department of
Nigeria Police Force doing their work in Uruagu-Nnewi but that a
situation where some policemen would storm the area between 12 midnight
and 2am in the name of searching for cultists left so much to be
desired.
Hon Nwonye
noted that the anti cult department of police with its operational s
base at Enugwukwu has on a number of occasions destroyed gates of
peoples houses only to discover that they have gone to wrong houses in
search of suspects.
He
pointed out there is need for the police department to let the community
and her vigilante group know about their intention to avoid a situation
where the vigilante operators would mistakenly shoot at the policemen.
"We
are not against any of the police department doing their legitimate
duty in our community at any time but we are raising this concern about
the midnight invasion without the knowledge of the community vigilante
for the safety of the law officers.
"There
was an incident about five years ago when a policeman went to effect an
arrest in the middle of the night, the suspect did not know that it was
a policeman that was scaling his fence, out of fear of being attack by
armed robbers, he shot at the policeman and today the rest is history,
the policeman has long joined his maker. This wouldn't have been so if
the proper thing was done.
Hon
Nwonye said that as part of efforts to rid his community of crime and
criminality, he has instructed the youth leader to begin a process of
making renunciation easy for any cult member who wants the way out.
He
however condemned a situation where the anti cult policemen demand from
their suspects the names of their friends only to go for the friends
and admit most of them to bail without taking them to court for trials
which he said gives a wrong impression about the purpose of the arrest.
It
took the intervention of elders of the community to prevail on the
youths of the community not to go on rampage as four youths were
allegedly injured by the anticult policemen in some of their raids.
The
cell phone of the Police Public Relation of the Anambra state command,
Mrs Nkiru Nwodo was switched off when attempt was made by our reporter
to get the police side of the story from her.
