Over 300 women screened for breast cancer in Anambra

www.odogwublog.com reports that over three hundred women from Idemmili North and South local government areas of Anambra State were screened of breast cancer by then winner of the Most Beautiful Girl in Idemmili, Miss Onyinye Chikeluba.
The breast cancer screening exercise was part of her pet project aimed at raising awareness, early detection and to fight the scourge of cancer.
Chikeluba said she was moved to embark on the project because of the increasing number of cases among women, coupled with the fact that cancer was a major killer in the world.
The beauty queen said: “Many women need regular screening for breast cancer, but because most women lack the resources to go for regular screening , they allow the lump on their breast to grow to a dangerous level.
“After winning the pageant, I thought of a project to embark upon during my reign and I came up with the idea of conducting cancer screening for the women in the two local government areas. That was why I came up with the cancer awareness campaign and I am happy that our women turned up in large numbers.
“We don’t pray that we will discover cancer cases during this exercise, but we have decided that the medical team would advise us on the next step to take to treat such cases.”
She urged the women to always examine themselves for any lump on their breasts and to approach any medical personnel for further advice, noting that many women had had to die carelessly due to not detection of the disease early.
She also explained that apart from the cancer awareness campaign, she hoped to execute two other projects during her reign.
Acting President General of Abatete Development Union, Mr. Annie Ekunie commended the beauty queen for coming to assist women in the area, adding that early detection of breast cancer would help reduce the number of cases among women.
He reminded the women that prevention was better than cure, adding that there was nothing for the women to be ashamed of by approaching medical personnel to have their breast tested on a regular basis.
