reports that South East Zonal Commander,
Consumer Protection Council, Ngozika Obidike has given the nod of CPC to
partner the Anambra state special anti-piracy and
counterfeit task force in the fight against counterfeit and pirated products in the state.
Obidike expressed gratitude to the
committee for their ideal decision of collaborating with the council in the
fight against piracy in the state.
Obidike, who flanked with the Heads,
Consumer Education, Nwafor Anthony and Surveillance and Enforcement Unit, Chuma
Uchegbu reiterated the commitment of the council in protecting consumers,
saying they they have all it takes to enforce action.
“I feel elated when I see people
that are committed with consumer protection. CPC has all it takes to protect
consumers’ interest because Consumers are king. “Our education and surveillance
departments are always ready to enlighten consumers on their rights and as well
enforce compliance through surveillance.
We are happy that people like you
are interested in supporting this fight against piracy and counterfeit. Our
major constraint in ensuring that enforcement and awareness get to the
grassroots is finance and not workforce.” She stated
Obidike, however highlighted
consumer’s rights to include: right to satisfaction of basic needs, right to
safety, information, consumer education and right to a healthy environment.
Speaking earlier, the Anambra
State chairman of Piracy Control Committee, Mr. Frank Uduonu, is seeking the
collaboration of the Consumer protection Council (CPC) in fighting counterfeit
products in the state.
Governor Willie Obiano,
penultimate week, inaugurated a special anti-piracy and counterfeit task force
charged with the responsibility of arresting and prosecuting individuals who
indulge in intellectual theft, forgery, and piracy.
Uduonu, who led other members on a
courtesy visit to the CPC office in Awka, appreciated the council for their
effort in curbing high rising counterfeit products in the country and consumer
protection, which he said , is in line with Governor Willie Obiano’s zero
tolerance on piracy and counterfeit.
According to him, “Governor Obiano’s
exploits in security is all encompassing and fighting piracy and its attendant
consequences is an arm of it and government will not rest until all pirates
relocate from Anambra state.
“That is why this synergy and
collaboration with CPC is paramount to us. The stage we are now is consultation
of relevant stakeholders in this fight like the CPC, the Nigerian police,
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Standard Organization of Nigeria
(SON), NSCDC, DSS and other organizations and after that, we go into
consolidation through enlightenment and education before confrontation” he
said.
