Anambra CP averts drivers protest and drivers boss released after illegally detained...





From Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Awka Over two thousand commercial buses would have been grounded Tuesday by drivers set to protest illegal arrest and detention of its newly elected state Chairman under trumped up charges but for the intervention of state police commissioner,  Garba Unarmed. 

The drivers in Anambra state, under the aegis of Drivers Welfare Association, we're happy the CP intervened and the Chairman released to them after it called for his immediate and unconditional release.

The drivers new chairman, Obinna Anisiobi was said to have been arrested on Saturday by the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), together with his vice, Elochukwu Remigus Obidike over alleged threats to life.

Speaking to newsmen yesterday shortly after a meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar, a patron to the body, Chief Comrade Peter Okala, expressed sadness over the arrest of their leaders, describing it as the hieght of impunity.

He accused the police of conspiring with one, Azubuike Uzo, a major contender that lost out in a keenly contested transperant and credible election that saw the emergence of the newly elected chairman.

He said the complainant had allegedly attempted to kidnap their leader which was immediately reported to the police and is still being investigated.

"If not for the immediate intervention of we the patrons of the association, a terrible crises would have been erupted today. Over 2000 vehicles would have been grounded and you know the implications, especially to the state economy.

"A group of policemen from SARS Abuja, on Saturday, came and bundled the newly elected chairman of this organization with his vice, and detained them in the Area Command.

"They said they are investigating a case of threat to life from the opponent led by one Azubuike Uzo and few others who have been formenting trouble in the union even before the election. He even wanted to kidnap the Obinna detained since Saturday before CP intervened. 

"The feelers we are getting is that the SARS are drinking with the complainants somewhere and they have refused to pick their calls. Even the CP has called them severally and they are not picking." he bemoaned.

According to Okala, the police commissioner had waded into the matter, saying he had promised to call the Area commander not to allow their leaders be moved away from their present location. We thanked him now we had he has been released.

"We don't want to visit the new CP with a crises laden case. That is why we have organised ourselves in a peaceful manner to officially inform him of the ugly development.

"He said he would conduct an interview with us and the complainants in order to carry out proper investigations. We are looking forth to that." he added.
