Lassa Fever: one dead, 65 on surveillance, says Anambra government

www.odogwublog.com reports that Lassa  One person has been confirmed dead of Lassa Fever and 65 others are currently being monitored in Anambra, official has said.
 Dr Emmanuel Okafor, Director of Public Health in the Anambra Ministry of Health disclosed this in an interview with newsmen during the opening ceremony to mark the 2nd edition of the skill acquisition training for Anambra youths at the federal Youth Development center, Mgbakwu in Awka North council area on Monday. But the event organized by Ministry of Youth Entrepreneurship and sports development under Dr Mrs Uju Nwogu , a lawyer took place at the ministry premises.
Okafor said the deceased lady (name withheld) was a nursing student in one private school in Idemili north when she was admitted to the Ojukwu Varsity Hospital Awka on June 11.
He said the lady was immediately transferred to General Hospital Irua, Edo state for Diagnosis where she died on June 17.
“She died at Irua, Edo state on Saturday, but she was admitted at Amaku, Awka before was transferred and admitted there.
“She was schooling at one private nursing school at Nkpor, she was bleeding from the gums and at the Teaching Hospital she was bleeding from the nostril and virgina, she was confirmed Lassa Fever victim in Irua,” he said.
“The moment it was confirmed she had Lassa fever, we started contacts tracing as of now we have about 65 we are following up, two of them have developed fever and their samples have been taken to Irua.
“We are still tracking other ones and have advised them on what to do to ensure they do not transfer it to their loved ones,” he said.
The urged residents to keep their surroundings and food free from rats.
