Robbers Strike UBA Bank in Asaba as police flee

Mobile police men attached to the United Bank of Africa (UBA) deserted the bank, giving room to hoodlums to have a free day.
It was learnt that at the time of the robbery incident, the only mobile police officer around was in a nearby restaurant when a three man armed robbery gang who laid siege on a customer of the United Bank of Africa (UBA), along the ever busy Nnebisi Road by Igbuzor Junction Asaba, the Delta State capital, killing the bank customer (name withheld).
Trouble started Monday morning when the bandits who parked their Green Vento Wagon car parked along Umuago few kilometres away from the bank, waiting for their unsuspected victim lunched an unsuccessful attack on him.
Eyewitnesses said the criminal swoop on the man who was going to pay in tobacco money for his company.
According to eyewitnesses, in attempt to whisk the undisclosed sum of money away in a move that resembled a scene in Nollywood films but was prevented by the tall, and fair in complexion man.
“The man struggled with them in an attempt secure his money, the hooligans shot him on the chest, hurriedly entered their waiting car and sped away”.
Following the gun shot, other customers of the bank and passers-by took to their heels scampering for safety.
Another eyewitness expressed bitterness over the lackadaisical attitude of the security operatives attached to the bank, “they were nowhere to be found when duty called. I have seen them severally harassing taxi driver and tricycle riders, extorting them of their hard earned money”, he alleged.
The eyewitness said after the show of muscles by the man and the lawbreakers, the man was shot, “but he quickly ran into the bank with money while the robbers escaped”.
According to the eyewitness, the mobile police officer attached to the bank was in a restaurant eating when the incidence occurred.
He said that at the release of gunshot, the officer quickly pulled off his uniform, hid his gun and walked out with a BYC under wear and a boxer on him.
“One of the armed robber was wearing a red cap, white long leaf T-shirt and jacket, on the T-shirt, No. 3 was written on it and he carried a locally made pistol. The bank is still with the money running into millions of naira”, he alleged further.
He narrated further that a good Samaritan, a female customer of the bank rushed the man to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where he gave up the ghost.
Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, simply said, “Investigation is ongoing. That is what I can tell you for now”.
Also contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of FMC, one Mr Ogbo, said, “The body of the man has been deposited at the mortuary. He couldn’t survive it”.
