www.odogwublog.com reports that twenty-four (24) hours after dare devil armed robbers attacked a customer at a Zenith bank branch on wethedral road in Owerri, the Imo State capital, one of the guns recovered was a stolen Police rifle.
Police Public Relations Officer Imo state, DSP Andrew Enwerem, confirmed that one AK47 Rifle with 100 rounds of ammunition that was earlier snatched from a policeman on November, 24, 2016, was recovered by the armed robbers during the operation.
He said that the police recovered it with three magazines from the armed robber shot dead during the gun battle.
The Police spokesperson had in a statement said "there was distress call that zenith bank situated along Wetheral road Owerri was under attack. The CP Command Imo State CP Taiwo Lakanu, fdc led a combined team of Police patrol and Detectives to the scene. On arrival, the operatives engaged the four armed robbers that arrived the bank with an ash colour Toyota Camry in a shoot out, at the end of the shoot out, three Police men sustained various degrees of gun shot injuries".
Further he said "one of the armed robbers was shot dead and one AK47 Rifle with 100 rounds of ammunition that was earlier snatched from a policeman on 24th of November, 2016 was recovered from the dead Armed robber with three magazines".
The gunmen had trailed a yet to be identified rich bank customer to the bank and robbed him of his millions of Naira which he came to deposit.
The three police men attached to the bank sustained different degrees of gun shot wounds and four other bank customers, as they shot sporadically, ostensibly to scare people away during the operation which lasted about half an hour.
However, one of the four man armed gang who had a field day shooting was shot dead by a plain cloth police officer guarding the bank, while the three others escaped in an ash coloured Toyota Camry, shooting carelessly into the air.
Meanwhile, the PPRO has said the injured Policemen are receiving treatment in a hospital, while Police operatives have intensified investigation to nab the fleeing robbers.
He maintained that it was not a bank robbery but was a bank customer that was robbed in front of a bank.
