DMGS Fire: Obiano pledges to compensate Onitsha fire victims


www.odogwublog.com reports that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, this afternoon pledged to compensate all those whose property, businesses and places of residence were destroyed by fire in the Wednesday fire in Onitsha where a filling station, business premisis and residential buildings were destroyed.

Speaking when he visited the scenes of the inferno, Obiano, who expressed dismay at the quantum of loss incurred by the affected persons and families, promised that the state government would do something urgently to rehabilitate the affected individuals.
"I am saddened at the enormity of destruction caused by fire to my people in Onitsha. Truly, I am sadened. However, the state government will quickly do something to assist the affected persons.
"All those who lost their accommodation would be provided alternative accommodation within the vicinity which will be paid for by the state government. All those that loss buildings and business premises, will also be compensated by our government, so that they will not be so much engulfed in grief.
"We are going to do all these through the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Nnameka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha. The traditional ruler will see to it that names of victims and properties lost are compiled", he said.
The governor, however, criticized people who build their filling stations within residential and business areas; and said that henceforth, location of such businesses would be monitored by the appropriate agency of the state government.
