A 35-year-old Nigerian arrested for peddling drugs in India has escaped from detention ahead of his planned deportation.
The man, identified as John Okoro, had been jailed in 2014 after being found guilty of trying to sell banned substances and was awaiting deportation after completing his jail term when he escaped, Mumbai Mirror reported.
According to the report, Okoro, who was being held in an Anti-Narcotics Cell in Azad Maidan, had in the early hours of Monday sought permission to use the toilet.
However, when he was led out of the detection room, on the first floor of the agency’s office, he jumped from the balcony, crashed through the asbestos roof and fled on foot.
A constable guarding him sustained injuries and was hospitalized after he also jumped from the balcony to capture the fleeing drug peddler.
A manhunt has been launched by the Anti-Narcotics agency for Okoro who would face fresh charges once captured.
