www.odogwublog.com reports that no fewer than five persons were hospitalized, while goods worth over N1.5 billion were destroyed when a midnight fire gutted a timber market at the industrial city of Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
However, those hospitalized were not in hospital because of injuries they sustained but as a result of High Blood Pressure arising from the loss of their goods.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Nnewi Timber Dealers Association, Chief Chukwunonso Nnetu said at the scene of the incident that a security man in the market alerted him around some minutes past 12 midnight to inform him that the market was on fire.
Nnetu explained that he quickly contacted Awka, Nnewi and Onitsha fire service stations, adding that it was Nnewi fire service men that later arrived at a time the fire had reached an advanced stage.
As at press time, he said the source of the fire outbreak was not known and that No life was lost.
On the extent of damage, Chief Nnetu said about 155 shops were razed down, 500 sawing and curving machines which cost is above N2 million each were destroyed, large quantities of woods and planks, among other items were all lost to the fire. He said the traders were losing over N1.5billion to the inferno. According to him, the traders experienced similar fire incident fifteen years ago.
Leadership of the market appealed to Governor Willie Obiano and other public spirited individuals and organizations to come to their aid.
Secretary to the market association, Mr Jude Ugwu said the fire targeted where all processing machines in the market were installed and wondered how the traders would overcome that in this time of recession.
Security man at the market when the incident occurred, Mr Chidi Eke said he suddenly saw a raging fire with billow of smoke from the southern end of the market and jointly with other security men around tried to use water from bore hole in the market to put out the fire but was beyond their control before he alerted the market association chairman.
