Hon Chukwuka Onyema donates science equipment to Ogbaru schools

www.odogwublog.com reports that the member representing Ogbaru Federal constituency, Hon Chukwuka Onyema has donated science equipment worth millions of naira to ten pilot secondary schools in his constituency to boost science education in the area.
Some of the science equipment donated to the schools includes; lenses, distilled water, charts, skeletons, spring balance, Ammeter, Voltmeter reagents such as potassium oxide, hydrochloric and sulphuric acids among others.
St Paul's Secondary school, Ogwuikpele, Manus Secondary School Okpoko, El Shalom Convent, Okpoko, Community Secondary School, Ideke Odekpe and Government Technical College (GTC) Secondary School, Osamala were among the benefiting schools.
Others include St Gregory secondary school, Iyiowa, Ogbaru High School, Ogbaru, Unity Comprehensive secondary school, Okpoko and Community secondary school, Atani.
Presenting the items, the legislator who is also the minority leader, Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Chukwuka Onyema said he is focusing on science education because the survey recently conducted indicates that his constituency is lagging behind in science education and his intention was also to draw the attention of students on practical learning than theories which, he described as foundation for cognitive learning.

He said his idea was to reach all the seventeen secondary schools in Ogbaru federal constituency but started with the first ten and hoping to reach out to the remaining seven in no distant time.
He noted that motivation behind all he is doing in his constituency was to bring dividends of democracy to the people. “Our slogan is lifting Ogbaru to a higher level and that is why we are torching all sectors. So, it gives me joy to pass in an area in my constituency and I see that my constituents have water to drink and feeder roads being accessible and that is why we are doing about five roads now.
“So my interest in attracting support for science and technology is informed by inadequate attention science and technology education is receiving in Ogbaru and in the entire country. I was able to attract all this because I acquired education coupled with the fact that I am bent on fulfilling my campaign promises. It is high time people start holding their political leaders accountable. We are building 200 ICT centres in Atani now and will build a JAMB centre in Okpoko and Ogbaru respectively”

He also pledged that he will equip the remaining schools and upgrade their laboratories to modern standard using the meteorological institute, even as he promised that he would sponsor transportation of other science equipment from other foreign donors to schools in Ogbaru.
He enjoined the schools management to make judicious use of the equipment while urging students to ensure they reciprocate his kind gesture by taking their studies seriously.
Responding, the state chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Chief Nzemeka Olisa, who chaired the occasion commended Hon. Onyema for the gesture which he said is the practical demonstration of the public private partnership and think home mentality.
He said that the number of schools in the state is overwhelmed by the number of students, especially in the science subjects which, according to him, informed their decision of asking for help from private individuals and cooperate bodies.
"Education without science is nothing. Science is doing and not talking and you cannot teach science without equipment and government cannot provide the requirements alone. That is why we encourage private individuals and firms to support government’s effort in education.
"We led in the external examination for three consecutive years and one of our secrets was making equipment available and ensuring that the students are familiarised with the science equipment" he said.
Patience Ogunjiofor, principal of Community Secondary School Iyiowa Odekpe, while thanking the lawmaker for the equipment, informed that the donated equipment will go a long way in preparing the science students in the forthcoming external examination.
One of the students, Miss Chinenye Ekwue from Ogbaru High School said she is looking forward to using the equipment supplied to their school adding that if enough science materials are provided for students, there would be more students indicating interest in the science subjects.
Present at the event were Atani tradional ruler, Igwe Azuka Augustine Ngodi, his Odekpe counterpart, Igwe Emma Onyia among other dignitaries.
