DPO 3-3 Police station Onitsha, Mrs Jane Mbanefo ( CSP)" in 'soup' for beating up a female lawyer, Miss Chiamaka Nwangwu

www.odogwublog.com reports that unless the state commissioner of Police settles the crisis breeding between the police and lawyers, a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, incharge of the police station at 3-3 Onitsha , Mrs Jane Mbanefo will be in trouble for beating a female young lawyer, Miss Chiamaka Nwangwu.
Miss Nwangwu was reported to have been beaten to pulp and her clothes torn by the police at 3-3 police station, Onitsha suburb, Anambra state last Friday even as the
Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of the station, Mrs Jane
Mbanefo, denied the allegation.

According to inside sources, trouble started for the lawyer when she
came to the station on behalf of her client who was being detained
over landlord/tenant saga which resulted in two fighting.

On arrival at the station, she made straight to where her client was
being detained behind the counter.

On the process of inquiring on why he (client) was being detained with
the wound sustained during the fight, the police at the counter
reportedly asked her to allow them to do their work.

At this juncture a heated argument ensued between the police and the
lawyer and as they were arguing, the DPO  came in and demanded to
know what was amiss.

The DPO on seeing that both the landlord and tenant that fought
themselves sustained severe injuries during the fight, ordered that
both should first go for treatment before the matter would be heard.

Her order did not go down well with the lawyer who immediately
objected, arguing that not only that his client was detained, but also
that the person who gave him the wound has been asked to first go for
treatment.

As she was opposing the order, the DPO directed that she should be
taken out of the charge room and as she was being removed by some
police officers, there was resistance and on the process she was said
to have been beaten to pulp.

Reacting to the incident, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Arthur
Obi Okafor, said, " when a few days ego news went viral about the
assault on a young female lawyer by the police operatives at 3-3
police station in Anambra state, I found it reprehensible, unbearable
and unacceptable".

"I commenced a personal investigation into the repugnant event. I have
been sufficiently appraised of the unfortunate event. I strongly
condemne the attack on a female legal practitioner, Miss Chiamaka
Nwangwu who was physically assaulted by the police operatives led by
the DPO, Mrs Jane Mbanefo ( CSP)"

"It is unjustifiable, unfortunate and totally wrong for the police to
prevent legal practitioners from communicating with or gaining acess
to their clients by assaulting them.

I have personally spoken with miss Nwangwu and commended her for
bringing the issue to the public. I am personally supporting and will
follow up on the NBA Onitsha branch are taking in pursuing the matter
to a logical conclusion" he stated.

In her defence when contacted the DPO said that nobody beat her up and
that she even apologized for what she did.

"We have the documented letter of apology which she made in the
presence of her mother who is a retired magistrate and her father.
They came with one other person and the Onitsha branch Chairman of NBA
was here too.

I called him when the girl was making a hell of noise to find out if
she is really a lawyer because of the way she was going.

Even when my officer was dragging her to get out of my office she was
resisting and my officer fell on my body"

Nobody came to me to hear from me except you (journalist) they have
gone to the social media blackmailing me without hearing from me", she
revealed further.

According to the DPO, "the clothe she said was torn was not truth and
she has even changed the one she wore. I have picture of her dressing
to show you nothing was done to her clothe".
