ALVAN Ikoku crises: Police arrest four over plans to burn school


www.odogwublog.com reports that four persons have been arrested and paraded by the police in Imo state for allegedly attempting to set on fire the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri.
Police Public Relations Officer for Imo state, DSP Andrew Enwerem, said Bright Onyiriuka, 20,Chijioke Ewurum, 26,Prince Abraham,22 and Ngozi Tochukwu, 18, were arrested by the operatives of the command bearing placards, and some quantities of petrol and old tyres.
According to him, they bore placards with the inscription "please Madam Provost, vacate office for peace to reign", written in red ink.
Enwerem disclosed that the suspects were arrested by the Police on Monday August 7, 2017, at the main gate of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, Imo state through intelligence information.
The PPRO explained that the four men have confessed to the crime of arson revealing that one person they simply identified as Sampson, currently at large, contracted them to set the College's premises on fire in protest over the continued stay in office of the provost, Dr Blessing Ijioma.
Enwerem disclosed that the suspects will soon be charged to court for arson at the conclusion of investigations, adding that efforts have been intensified to  ensure that Sampson was apprehended.
One of the suspects, Ewurum told The Authority Daily that one Sampson accosted them at a pub called Timaya in Owerri, and promised to pay them N1,000 each if they partook in the protest.
Ewurum explained that while Sampson told them to carry placards, he never explained that the action may be considered an offence.
The Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri has been enmeshed in crisis over the extension of the Provost's tenure in office by the Governing Council  after her compulsory retirement on  August 2,2017, upon attaining 65 years of age.
Already, the Joint Action Committee of the College has refused the extension, and embarked on a one week strike to compel the Provost to vacate office.
