www.odogwublog.com reports that barely one year after the Nigerian Army placed order for 5000 pairs of foot wares for its personnel from Aba shoe manufacturers, the Nigerian Navy has concluded plans to procure uniform for its personnel also from Aba.
This was disclosed when a delegation of the Chief of Naval Staff led by Commodore Chris Obinta visited Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu at the Governor's Lodge Aba.
Addressing the Governor, leader of the delegation, Commodore Obinta said they were in the state to see things for themselves with a view to undertaking the feasibility study of the partnership with the state government.
He lauded the enterprising spirit of Aba artisans especially garment and shoe manufacturers whom he said had done Nigeria proud through their ingenuity.
Obinta also thanked the Abia state government for agreeing to partner with the Navy in the production of naval uniforms and expressed confidence that the deal would be a success.
Responding, Gov. Ikpeazu restated the resolve of his administration to make Aba the hub of leather and garment manufacturing in Nigeria and Africa.
According to him one million pairs of shoes are exported from Nigeria through Aba every week.
He said that the state government’s aggressive campaign on made in Aba products in the last one year had resulted in the labeling of Aba products as "made –in- Nigeria."
His word: “I believe that the Navy as a strategic partner if they partner in economic development of the country if they partner with us will go a long way to enhance confidence of our artisans engaged in the trade.”
“I commend the Nigeria Navy for indicating interest in procuring their wears from our people here in Aba. I must also commend the federal government for the support given to our made- in- Aba promotion campaign.
"Made-in Aba is bigger than the geographical entity of Aba.Made –in – Aba is a philosophy that has even gone beyond the shores of Nigeria. We encourage our people to patronize made –in Aba goods and services”.
