FUTO expels six final year students over protest

www.odogwublog.com reports that Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State has expelled six students including  Elvis Onuoha, a final year student of the department of Animal Science Technology; Collins Ogbonna, of the fisheries and Aquaculture Technology; Odunze Ebuka of the computer science department; Kenneth Megwa, Prosthetics and orthotics department; Nnamdi Madu and Collins Ugwu of the department of optometry.

This is as a fresh crises may be brewing at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, as the school authorities has expelled six final year students of the University for allegedly spearheading the February 17,2017, demonstration which engulfed the school.
The school management directed the affected students to immediately vacate the hostels and handover all University property in their possessions to the Dean student affairs, desist from entering the University campus without the approval of the Vice chancellor and to stop presenting themselves and taking parts in students related activities with immediate effect.
The expelled students were alleged to have organized the students protest despite the warning of the Students Union Government (SUG) and without proper channels of communication within the University which the school management believes is a gross misconduct.
The students had embarked on peaceful protest to register their displeasure with the increase in tuition fees but which turned violent, and resulted in the destruction of the computer centre, buses, amongst other properties.
The school had been shut down since the incident while panels of inquiries were set up to identify the causes of the mayhem and suggest ways to avoid a repeat.
When contacted on the development, the FUTO Vice chancellor, Prof Francis Eze said "I did not expel anybody, the University Senate did".
However the expulsion order has caused a major upset amongst the students who are irked that after spending five to six years, their fellow students were expelled for protesting an anomaly.
Students who pleaded anonymity said the panels did not suggest expulsion but the VC did in a bid to send fear into students, saying he should get ready to expel all the students of the citadel of learning.
