Enugu Assembly moves for local government autonomy amidst jubilation

www.odogwublog.com reports that the Enugu state House of Assembly has promised to assist in providing all legislative frameworks that help The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees [NULGE] in realizing it's dream of autonomy for the local government administration in Nigeria.


The Speaker of the State House of Assembly,Hon Edward Ubosi, represented by his deputy, Hon Don Uzogbado, made the promise when the National executive of NULGE,led by it's President, Mr Ibrahim Khaleel,took their scheduled zonal  advocacy protest to Enugu today.


Uzogbado told the protesters who assembled at the famous late Michael Okpara square, after their peaceful procession across some streets of the metropolis, that the state assembly in accordance with laid down rules of the democratic process will not fail to play their expected roles,when the concept reaches the stage of appendage of Nigerian law makers.


He advised NULGE to be guided by laid down rules and  democratic norms in the pursuit of the objective. He urged them to continue to pray for the success of governance both at the Federal and state levels,precisely stating that 'Enugu State is in the hands of God' and has remained the secret of Governor Ugwuanyi's successful administration so far,amidst lean resources accruing to the state.



Earlier in his Speech,  NULGE President, Mr Ibrahim Khaleel, said their mission to Enugu is to commence their nationwide campaign,scheduled to start at zonal levels
in Lafiya, Calabar, Lagos, Kano, Enugu and Jalingo with grand finale at Abuja.


According to him, all the 36 state branches and 774 LGCs will conduct similar exercise in their domains under the supervision of an assigned National Officer.


His words,“We will mobilise to engage governors and other stakeholders in the country toward the freedom of the local government councils;.




He said that if resources from the Federal Government were given to local governments directly, the people at the grassroots would benefit greatly because the councils were the closest to the people.


“We remain committed to our demand for autonomous council areas and we will continue to air our voices until something is done.”
