Abakaliki, Ebonyi state EDDC headquarters shut down by Electricity consumers

www.odogwublog.com reports that Business activities were yesterday abruptly halted at Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EDDC) in Ebonyi State as protesters shut down the headquarters of the firm in Abakaliki the Ebonyi state capital.

It was after several hours and intervention by security operatives that some electricity consumers who led the protesters to the EDDC left the scene.

Though peaceful, the protesters, numbering over 50 shut offices of the
Company and barricaded all roads leading in and out of the
headquarters.
Addressing newsmen, spokesman of the protesters, Mr. Simon Uneke
expressed dissatisfaction over alleged fraudulent services being
rendered by EDDC.

Another protester called on the Distribution Company to provide
consumers in the state with prepaid meters and upgrade its
distribution infrastructure to improve on electricity supply.

They were later joined by the Students of Ebonyi State University
(EBSU), who carried placards with inscriptions such as “provide
pre-paid meters to consumers and stop operating without condition of
service EDDC stop Arbitrary Billing, Stop Load rejection”.

In a related development, residents of Number Thirty Water Works Road
Hiltop Abakaliki have appealed to Enugu Electricity Distribution
Company to address the issue of power surge following a fire incident
that occurred in the area.

The owner of the property, Mr Chidi Ekwueme alleged that the fire
which almost razed a super market located in the building was caused
by a power surge from EDDC Transformer.

Reacting, the Communication Manger of EDDC in the State, Mr Chinedu
Ilo explained that the Company had put in place measures to address
its infrastructural challenges but denied any form of load rejection.

Mr. Ilo promised to investigate the alleged power surge pointing out
that the issue of poor power supply was not peculiar to the State.
