A corp member undertaking the compulsory one year National Youth Service Corps[NYSC] scheme at Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun state, Ajani Bless me, a microbiologist who graduated from the Obafemi Awolowo University [OAU] has organized a free breast and cervical awareness and screening for residents of the community.

The medical outreach and screening exercise, which is part of her community development service[CDS], was organized in partnership with the health and psychological trust center- Project Pink Blue, Abuja for over 100 women.

The awareness screening and counseling programme was flagged off with a health walk which was attended by the wife of the traditional ruler of the community, the oniko of ikolaje, Olorin Olubunmi Olakunle, popularly called [OOO]

In his address to kick off the screening exercise, Mr. Ugwu Ifeji from project pink blue reiterated the need for members of the public not to misconceive what cancer really is.

He said: Cancer is just a word and not a death sentence as most people wrongly think. The fact that one has cancer does not mean the end of the world for such person, and that is why we are here today. He further stated that the best ways to avoid the painful effects of cancer is early detection through self breast examination and prompt report to the nearest hospital.

Also, Dr. Hassanat Saliu of the society for family health[SFH] advised women to avoid eating refined and canned foods, which she hinted has negative effect on their health.

While lauding the corps member for her efforts, the NYSC Local Government Inspector[LGI] Mrs. Eze Nkiru said the scheme is poised to cater for the needs of the women in rural communities.

One of the main purposes of the NYSC scheme is for corps members to identify the project that will be of great importance to the community where they are posted.
