“Whom shall we send and who will go for us?” Gentlemen of the press, this quotation which came out of the mouth of our creator before our Lord Jesus Christ was sent on his Messianic Mission is the same question on the lips of many Anambra people today.
Anambra people, noted for their industry and diligence have suffered the misfortune of bad rulers since the third republic.
Before the collapse of the second republic, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife emerged on the ticket of old Aguata union (OAU). Governor Ezeife’s capabilities could not be properly ascertained because he was racing against time.
After the military returned power to civil rule in 1999, Dr. Clement Chinwoke Mbadinuji was sponsored by a click. We are all witnesses to Mbadinuju’s performance in office. When the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) refused to sponsor Mbadinuju for another term in office, another click led by Chief Chris Ubah sponsored Dr. Chris Ngige. Ngige stoutly resisted the dictation of this sponsors and the result is the burning down of Anambra state.
Perhaps, Governor Peter Obi is the only person that sponsored himself into office and we can see the difference. It was only during Governor Obi’s tenure that Anambra witnessed meaningful development. You may say Obi is the best Governor Anambra has had.
However, at the end of Obi’s tenure, he tried to please the people of Anambra North Senatorial district by picking a candidate to run the office of governor from there. Students of his will remember me as one of the champions of power rotation to Anambra north through my Olu N’ Adagbe movement that created massive awareness about subject. In the end, Chief Willie Obiano becomes the beneficiary of the campaign for power shift as he succeeded Governor Obi in office.
We have watched Obiano for two years, plus, and it seems to us that the old trend of imposition of candidates that cannot perform has returned.
OUR POSITION: our position today is that we will no longer support a candidate who has no solid base; who needs and must rely on people to climb to power the proverbial ‘He Goat’ that cannot perform even if helped to climb. A candidate Anambra needs to make progress must be capable of standing on his own, capable of contesting and winning election; a candidate who has the financial muscle and strength of character to shoulder the responsibilities of election and leadership; a man who does not have a questionable source of income and who is seen as man of the people. The era of jumping down from Aeroplane and picking governorship seat is over and gone forever.
Gentlemen of the press, we felt that we owe it a duty to not only make our stand known but speak out as the hustle and bustle and search for the next governor of Anambra State begins.
